You’ve scheduled your Autumn family photo session, but now what is everyone going to wear?! The idea of choosing outfits for everyone in the family can feel overwhelming and daunting. We get it and we are here to help! Follow the guide below to help you confidently coordinate looks for the whole family for session day!
Let's start by looking for a color palette for your family outfits. Autumn in the Midwest is the ideal season to capture stunning photos. Let Mother Nature guide you towards a vibrant and earthy color palette, featuring warm oranges, rich reds, deep blues, and luxurious plums. Embrace the beauty of neutral tones like ivory, cream, khaki, olive green, and various shades of brown.
Let's use this fall forest photo to create a put together color palette. First, choose 1-2 dominant colors that you’ll use to anchor your palette. Let’s say rust orange, and burgundy. Next, add 2- 3 neutrals to round out your color palette. Here, let’s use ivory, and olive.
Voila! We just built a beautiful Autumn color palette!
Now, use your color palette to find clothing items that make everyone feel their best!
It can be easiest if you start with clothing for Mom, or the oldest female.
Choose one of your dominant colors from your palette and consider a long, flowy dress or skirt in this hue. Dresses add beautiful movement and softness to your photographs. A floral or small pattern can work really well here. Not a dress fan? Consider jeans or slacks and a flowy blouse or textured sweater. Note that adults often photograph best in long sleeves to keep the center of attention on the face.
Once you’ve pulled your first style together, you can add in the other hues from your palette for outfits for the rest of the family. Again, dresses and skirts can add movement. Layers and textured sweaters for this time of year will add visual interest to your photographs.
Let’s try one more palette. Again, pulling colors from nature.
And we’ve got another beautiful color palette to work with.
I’ll leave you with just a few more style notes to consider...
Patterns that work can be florals, larger stripes, or small subtle shapes (avoiding stark contrast in the background of the shirt with the pattern’s shape color).
Stay away from thin, closely spaced stripes, they can create an odd visual effect in photographs called moire that we want to avoid.
Avoid large logos and stay away from very bright, or neon colors as they can give the skin an unnatural color cast.
Neutrals can be added to an existing color palette or can be THE ENTIRE color palette if you’d like a more muted look.
If you’ll be holding a baby or toddler for a good portion of the photo session, avoid dressing in the exact same hue.
Explore these captivating autumn photographs taken by Joe for The Beuning Family. The family opted for a stunning color scheme featuring hues of rust red and deep blues, which were elegantly complemented by soft neutrals such as ivory, grey, and brown. Take note of the diverse textures present in the clothing, ranging from various sweater weaves to suede and cable knits. This family session was truly remarkable.
It's hard to showcase just one....
Okay, one more....
